Adjustments
An adjustment is a corrective manipulation of a joint with the aim to restore mobility and function. When a joint becomes fixated or subluxated, this adjustment aims to return the joint to a homeostatic (or balanced) state. Often, the body has already attempted to stabilize or otherwise work around the fixation, and as a result, some massage therapy, stretches, and/or exercises may also be warranted to help the body better maintain the adjustment.

Do I need an Adjustment? To paraphrase a professor Dr. Ben had at Logan University; “If you have a spine, you need an adjustment.” Much like going to the Dentist to maintain healthy teeth and gums, Chiropractors specialize in maintenance and preventative care, seeking to keep the body in a healthy state and thereby minimize future injuries. While we also do extremely well with the above-listed issues, our main goal at Gokenbach Health is to get you to a point where you no longer have need of us beyond this simple maintenance.

What if I'm Pregnant?
Perinatal Chiropractic Care is wonderful to ensure both the health and well-being of the mother as well as the baby. By keeping the mother adjusted during her pregnancy, undue stress and strain are alleviated both on her and the baby, minimizing many prenatal concerns. The Webster Technique in particular, is excellent for pregnant women and their little one, and helps to encourage a smooth delivery.
What about my Kids?
Babies
Pediatric Chiropractic Care is excellent for the newborn as well, helping to minimize birth trauma and help with good skull and skeletal formation, as well as helping with issues such as latching, sleep problems, and many more.
Children
As the baby grows into a toddler, small child, and beyond, regular adjustments are also beneficial to help maintain good growth patterns, prevent development of scoliosis, improve cognitive functions and behavioral development, and promote good overall health by keeping the body in as low-stress condition as possible.

Acupuncture / Acupressure
Acupuncture is an ancient form of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that involves the insertion of needles into specific points on the body to achieve a therapeutic effect. Acupressure is nearly identical to Acupuncture but applies pressure to these points rather than needles.
As it is based in Chinese Medicine, the approach of Acupuncture is decidedly Eastern, and thus fails to be sufficiently described by Western thoughts and approaches. Whereas Western medicine approaches disease with pharmaceuticals, surgeries, and such, Eastern medicine sees disease as an imbalance within the system. Similarly to Chiropractic, Acupuncture treats the body as a whole, recognizing the body’s tendency to self-repair and maintain, if only allowed to do so. Thus, Acupuncture seeks to restore balance to the many systems of the body using the nerves in the skin to influence the deeper structures and systems.
As ancient as this art is, there are several schools of thought when it comes to the application of Acupuncture. The Gold Standard is TCM, which is where the majority of recognized Acupuncture Points have been defined and codified. It is well known for its accuracy, consistency, and repeatability. The Japanese style uses these same points, while using fewer needles, relying on the body to direct the energy rather than the detailed road map that TCM uses. Auricular Acupuncture focuses on points within the ear, useful for addictions, mental fogginess, anxieties, etc, and was codified in France.
We use a combination of these methods and more, seeking to use as few needles as possible to do the job, so long as it is done correctly and well.

Massage
Massage Therapy is the application of physical pressure into the muscles and soft tissues of the body to help relax muscular tension, decrease blood pressure, and relieve pain and tension in the body, to name but a few benefits. The therapist will use combinations of kneading, long strokes, and tapping, and occasionally cupping or deeper tissue techniques in each session. There are several modalities of massage, many of which we provide here at Gokenbach Health. A few of the specific styles you can request are briefly described below.
Types of Massage:
Types of Massage:
- Swedish - This is what is considered by most to be ‘a regular massage.’ Of the modalities, it tends to be the gentlest and most relaxing, and what most people think of when they hear the word massage.
- Deep Tissue - A more therapeutic style of massage, and one aimed at corrective and mobilizing methods. This modality works deeper layers of tissue, though is not necessarily deep pressure.
- Sports - A brief and invigorating style of massage, this modality is designed to improve range of motion and blood flow to the muscles prior to a sporting event, run, or other physical activity. This modality is far from relaxing, but is quite good for getting warmed up prior to activity.
- Chair - This is less a modality and more a ‘change of venue.’ A way to do massage while clothed for events and with more portability, it is very popular for business retreats, health fairs, and baby showers, to name a few.
- Prenatal - Speaking of babies, this modality of massage is a specialized version of Swedish massage that is safe and wonderfully effective for pregnant women in their 2nd and 3rd trimesters. Performed mainly while laying on your side, we provide pillows and other supports so you can relax fully during your session.
Sports Medicine
(Sports Science & Rehabilitation)
The focus of the (SS&R) is to correct specific movements that patients may be unaware are contributing to pain and dysfunction. Something as simple as standing up from sitting has multiple variables that can contribute to knee pain, hip and low back issues, and even incontinence. Migraines can be traced to poor posture of course, but also subtle dysfunction of shoulder movements and even tension in the hands and forearms. The adage ‘everything in the body is connected to everything else’ holds very true, particularly here.
We start by identifying the patient’s chief complaint, then trace its aggravators back through their job, activities, posture, and other factors to identify where a deficiency of movement might be and provide combinations of stretches and exercises to improve both this deficiency and the initial complaint. While the skeleton provides structure for our body, the muscles provide support and balance for that structure, and when a muscle or group of muscles overpower others or become exhausted from overuse, the structure changes. Therefore our overall goal here is to balance the musculature in order to remove strain and stress on the system, and bring the skeletal structure back into alignment, releasing the underlying strain of maintaining a dysfunctional system.
Many people may be distracted by ‘Sports Science’ in this description, and wonder how it applies to them if they are not an athlete. It merely refers to how these chains of movement have been studied more in athletes rather than the average person. The information gathered is applicable to all, but having space for the equipment necessary to study our movements and the effects each change has is simply too prohibitive for an office or vehicle.
Young Athletes
We work with young athletes both in injury rehabilitation and prevention, teaching and practicing how to stabilize, strengthen, balance, and maintain their physiology during the stresses and demands of their sports and activities. We provide a workup specific to each patient, and tailor their exercises and homework both to their physical capabilities and their goals. As progress is made, these workout plans are modified to continue safely pushing the athlete through their goals in healthy and sustainable ways, while helping to prevent injury in the present and in the many years after.
Physicals
A physical is a basic ‘check-up’ of your body, gathering blood pressure, height and weight, and other baseline health information. Currently, we offer annual, school, and sports physicals, and are currently working towards offering DOT physicals as well.
